Young Individuals Who Maintain Heart-Healthy Lifestyles Face Lower Heart Disease Risk

Individual running across pathway
New study findings indicate that young adults with good heart health often preserve it throughout later years.
  • Recent studies reveals that developing cardiovascular-friendly routines during early adult years may determine your heart disease risk in future years.
  • In a four-decade study involving more than 4,200 young adults, those with better cardiovascular wellness early on preserved it — whereas others showed a gradual deterioration.
  • Research results suggest proactive measures is key, but including subsequent habit modifications can still help protect against heart attack and stroke.

Establishing cardiovascular-friendly habits early in life is crucial to reducing your risk of myocardial infarction and cerebrovascular accident in advanced years.

You've likely encountered this guidance previously from medical professionals or loved ones. But new research shows just how closely cardiovascular wellness in young adult years is connected to the probability of experiencing cardiovascular disease in future decades.

In a study published in the tenth month, researchers followed over 4,200 participants between 18 and 30 for nearly 40 years to monitor extended patterns. They discovered that participants typically exhibited different cardiovascular trajectories. And those patterns started young: By age 25, the majority had established regular practices that promoted cardiovascular wellness — or didn't.

Scientists used a comprehensive scoring system, a composite assessment method created by the American Heart Association, to assess comprehensive heart wellness. It includes health behaviors such as smoking status and sleep quality, as well as health indicators like blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Individuals who have a elevated LE8 score are considered as having optimal cardiovascular health, while low scores are linked with suboptimal heart condition.

Individuals who had favorable heart wellness early in adulthood, indicated by elevated cardiovascular ratings, tended to maintain it as they aged. Conversely, those with unfavorable heart condition and reduced assessment ratings saw their lifestyles and wellness decline over time.

Those patterns had real-world effects on medical results: poor heart condition in young adult years was linked to a tenfold increase in the risk of heart conditions later in life.

"The primary objective of the study was to comprehend how we go from healthy young adults to middle-aged folks who develop risk factors," commented a prominent cardiologist and cardiovascular epidemiologist.
"What we found was that if you had a favorable rating, you typically preserved that optimal level. And the poorer you were at the start, the more it tended to decline over time. People with the consistently elevated cardiovascular rating had the lowest incidence of cardiac events by far," the specialist explained.

Heart-Healthy Practices Reduce Heart Attack Risk Later in Life

Researchers analyzed the connection between cardiovascular wellness in early adult years and later heart conditions using a long-term prospective study.

Starting in the 1980s, participants participated in periodic assessments to monitor factors that influence heart conditions over the following 35 years.

Researchers enrolled 4,241 individuals in the study. Over 50% were women, and approximately half reported as Black. The remaining participants were Caucasian men.

Heart wellness was assessed using the comprehensive scoring score and used to monitor heart health changes throughout adulthood.

Participants were categorized into 4 separate developmental pathways of cardiovascular wellness over time:

  • Persistent high — started with a high score and preserved it
  • Persistent moderate — started with a middle score and preserved it
  • Average deteriorating — began with a moderate rating that got worse
  • Below average deteriorating — started with a moderate to low score that got worse

Researchers identified several important conclusions from these trajectories. The first was that the four trajectory patterns never merged with one another, indicating that once someone was on a specific trajectory, for better or worse, they stayed on it.

"The research suggests that the heart wellness trajectory that is set by age 25 years is difficult to modify going forward. So youthful instruction and intervention are necessary," stated a cardiologist unaffiliated with the study.

The subsequent discovery was how much risk was associated with each group. Relative to the "persistent high" scoring group, each category showed a greater occurrence of cardiovascular events in a stepwise fashion: the worse the pathway, the greater the risk.

People in the least favorable trajectory, those with deteriorating ratings, had a significantly elevated risk of CVD later in life compared to the high-scoring category.

Interestingly, individuals whose cardiovascular health varied over time — an individual who started with a unfavorable rating and improved it, or a favorable rating that deteriorated — had minimal variation than those in the middle-scoring category.

"It's possible there are residual effects of lower heart wellness status that carries through to adulthood," explained the cardiologist. "Building beneficial practices early in life is crucial because it may be difficult to catch up in the future. Meaning correcting for those early poor habits later in life may not be enough, and that your susceptibility may remain higher."

Cardiovascular Wellness Matters at All Stages of Life

The results highlight the importance of developing heart-healthy habits during early adult years and even earlier. You are "never too young" to start considering cardiovascular wellness, commented the researcher.

"Guiding youth onto those healthier trajectories means they're increased probability to remain at the top of that category with highest heart wellness across their lifetime. Those individuals will live longer and with less chronic diseases. I think that's a real win," he said.

Nevertheless, he emphasized that heart health is important at every age. While early initiation offers the greatest benefit, the study shows that improving your habits later in life can still lower your risk of cardiovascular disease.

Everybody can use Life's Essential 8 to understand the essential elements that influence cardiovascular wellness and implement measures to improve it — such as being more physically active or getting better sleep.

"There's always time to change. Yes, the earlier you start, the bigger the effect will be, but it will consistently benefit, it will always improve your results," the researcher said.

Medical professionals suggest consulting your healthcare provider to establish what the optimal course of action will be for your personal situation.

"Proactive measures remains our primary tool for fighting heart disease. This incorporates regular examinations with a primary care doctor to monitor hypertension, checking cholesterol as indicated, and counseling on nutrition, exercise, and tobacco cessation," he explained.
