Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People buying these treatments should be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of appetite.
"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This challenge is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
Finally, experts caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural support.
