Marco Rubio announced this Friday that every trade discussion with Canada had been suspended after Canada's government shared via social platforms a five-minute clip of a 1987 speech by President Reagan criticizing tariffs that seemed to trigger President Trump's anger.
The premier of Ontario, Premier Ford, whose administration ran the Reagan ad in American markets recently, posted on social media that the two nations are "more powerful united", while President Trump posted his own string of social media posts promoting the supposed benefits of tariffs.
"Our neighbor and the US are allies, partners and allies. Leader Ronald Reagan understood that we are better united," Ford wrote with the Reagan video. "Bless Canada and God bless the United States of America."
The deterioration in relations apparently stems from a one-minute TV commercial including President Reagan's broadcast declaring that "tariffs hurt every American worker"
Trump reacted on his social platform without evidence that Canada had somehow run a "fraudulent" and "false" commercial, and announced that "all trade negotiations with Canada are hereby ended"
Secretary Rubio, the top diplomat, on Friday informed journalists that the Ontario premier had broadcast advertisements in the United States which "used Reagan's statements out of context," noting that the Reagan organization had criticized the effort, too
The Reagan Foundation stated Thursday that the provincial government's advertisement "distorts" the President's speech, without elaborating how
The premier's team answered by resharing the extended, five-minute segment, and claimed that the advertisement uses "a direct clip from a Reagan public addresses, which is available through public domain"
Congress members on the House committee jumped in to support the Ontario advertisement
"Here is the commercial that drove Trump to cancel all negotiations with Canada," the committee shared on social media
The dispute comes as each country face significant dates in the coming weeks
An expert, the director of the Center for Canadian Studies at the university, suggested the collapse in talks merely formalizes a unproductive process
"Can we stop trade talks? Yes, you can end discussions about metals, aluminium, power, everything," he said
The analyst noted the contradiction of the President citing Reagan while undoing his economic policies
"The former president supported the country – he believed in free trade. Maybe President Trump thinks that, but that's not his current position now"
Washington implemented 25% tariffs on goods from Canada this spring, leading to countermeasures from Canada before Trump raised duties to 35% in the summer
Ontario, heavily dependent on cross-border production and automotive commerce, has been especially impacted
The breakdown ultimately puts the prime minister navigating internal challenges with a minority government
"Carney is trying to keep every region united," Sands commented
