Trinidad and Tobago Allows US Military Access to National Airfields Amid Rising Tensions with Venezuela

Officials in Trinidad and Tobago has announced it will permit the United States military to operate from its airports in the near future. This development occurs amid increasing geopolitical friction between the US and its neighbor Venezuela.

New Defense System Fuels Controversy

This announcement follows the recent installation of a military-grade radar system at an airport in Tobago. National the government have insisted the radar's sole use is for combating illegal operations, asserting it is not a springboard for military strikes against another country.

Critics and opposition figures caution, however, that these arrangements could draw Trinidad and Tobago into former President Donald Trump's intensifying political strategy against Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

Scope of Agreement and Government Explanation

As per a foreign affairs statement, US activities at the airports would be focused on logistics, assisting with resupply efforts and standard troop rotations. The government provided no further details beyond this.

The nation's leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has in the past praised US airstrikes targeting alleged drug boats in regional waters, actions that have allegedly resulted in multiple deaths, among them a number of Trinidadian citizens.

Earlier Statements and Subsequent Revelations

At first, Persad-Bissessar claimed a US C-17 aircraft that landed in Tobago was transporting marines to support a civilian road construction project. Yet, when pictures emerged of the radar installation, she admitted that at least 100 marines were present in the country, accompanied by the powerful radar.

The radar, identified as a long-range AN/TPS-80 G/ATOR, is described as aerial monitoring, defense, and counter-fire operations.

Proximity and Geography

Trinidad and Tobago is situated extremely close from Venezuela at their narrowest separation. It has main international gateways: Piarco International in Trinidad and ANR Robinson International in Tobago.

This development comes after a previous incident in October, when a US warship docked in Trinidad's capital, as part of the Trump administration's increased military pressure on Venezuela.
