The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.
An upcoming six-part season created by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, according to the production team.
The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."
The previous series wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only came this week.
Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.
Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."
An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a offender.
However, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, the teaser suggested.
Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."
"We're privileged to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh installment."
Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."
The Scottish actor called appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".
"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."
"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."
The drama launched in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.
The BBC has not yet announced when the new season will hit screens.
The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.
Nevertheless, the network announced on this week that a new season is now being produced.
