Among all the adult-oriented cartoon movies I have ever viewed, nothing has remained with me as much as the dread-soaked conclusion of the viscerally violent and overwhelingly transgressive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, the Spain-based filmmaker developed a grim, somber and often savage world with a few small , forlorn twinges of optimism.
While The Unicorn Wars appears as it came from a desire to advance the medium even more, the director explained that it was actually an attempt to express a universal, multicultural message about “the mutual source of every conflict.”
That idea is expressed by means of a band of brightly hued teddy bears , openly inspired by a popular line of cuddly figures.
Being raised in a community focused on militarism as well as the defense industry, many of these creatures are obsessed with exterminating unicorns, because of a religious scripture that tells the bears they were once rulers of the woodland, before the horned beings forced them out.
A few haven’t fully fallen for the propaganda, , choose to sample narcotics and engage sexually in the forest.
Unlike their cuddly counterparts, these vivid animals show genitals and clear libidos.
For a particular especially vicious, skeptical animal, the bear named Bluey, the war with the unicorns becomes a path to control — and specifically to supremacy over his gentler, more compassionate sibling the character Tubby.
This bear behaves aggressively and a seeming antisocial figure , and while fear takes over his squad and kills his comrades sequentially, he seizes progressively influence for himself, through ever more bloody, harmful methods.
At the same time, the horned creatures are enduring their own horror, in the form of an expanding, destructive monster in their forest.
“Initially, it appears as a humorous movie,” the director stated. “Yet it evolves into a more intense and melancholic movie. And by the end, it becomes a horror film.”
Unicorn Wars commences resembling among the quirky films from a renowned filmmaker, that uncover a wicked pleasure in letting animated figures curse, fire weapons, or sex each other up.
Afterward it turns into something more like a darker work from the same creator, including ever more visual gore , a palpable relation to genuine horror of war.
By the end, it’s a full-on Grand Guignol massacre.
The horror which makes this an ideal spooky-season watch begins well before than that description suggests.
The Unicorn Wars is one for the hardcore fans of gore, for lovers of intense movies who desire to watch something they haven’t ever watched previously, and are able to withstand a plot which delivers no restraint.
Watch it with the lights off free from interruptions, and the finale will crawl into your mind and linger.
