For the first time in 25 years, no portion of the state is experiencing dryness. This significant achievement arrives after grueling years marked by insufficient rainfall that exacerbated wildfire risks and pressured its enormous farming industry.
Thursday's report from the U.S. Drought Monitor illustrated that California in its entirety is without drought or abnormal dryness. This change was driven by a period of above-normal rainfall that topped up water storage sites like Shasta and Oroville exceeding their long-term norms.
“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve only known in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” remarked a climate scientist.
Achieving this status included intense and deadly winter storms that battered the state in 2023, resulting in widespread flooding, blackouts, and tragic losses. Even though those events helped ease the drought, they fell short of ending it.
As late as late December, pockets like the state's northeast corner were considered abnormally dry. Substantial precipitation at the start of the new year washed away those remaining dry spots.
Yet, authorities caution that being out of drought should not be confused with having no water worries. Latest data of the high-elevation snow show it at roughly seven-tenths of the historical norm.
This frozen reservoir, which supplies approximately 30% of the state's water as it runs off, is a key piece for the year ahead. State experts have emphasized that it is not yet time to determine the outlook for the months ahead.
“The current pattern right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” said a hydrology section chief. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to pick up by the start of April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”
Even as the official status indicates no dryness, attention turns to sustaining this precious water balance throughout the months to come.
