Over many decades, Virginia has seen 74 governors, each one of them male. Recently, Abigail Spanberger broke this longstanding tradition by winning the election as the first female governor in Virginia's records.
The former US representative and Central Intelligence Agency operative triumphed with a election strategy that focused on economic pressures and deliberately targeted Trump-era measures rather than the president himself.
Born in a New Jersey town on August 7, 1979, she relocated to a Richmond area at her early teens. Her dad was an army veteran who subsequently pursued a career in law enforcement; her mother was a healthcare professional and community helper.
She studied at the University of Virginia, receiving a diploma in French studies. Post-graduation, she worked briefly as a classroom instructor before turning to a life of service.
âI was raised believing that I wanted to emulate my father and I did,â Spanberger shared with supporters at a event in Norfolk, Virginia over the weekend.
At the US Postal Inspection Service, she handled involving drugs, child predators and financial criminals. She served court mandates, frequently being the sole female on the arrest team. She then entered the Central Intelligence Agency and focused on national security, serving undercover and overseas.
In that year, she and her spouse, an engineer, reached a career crossroads. Living on the west coast, they were contemplating another foreign posting. They took out a globe and inquired of their eldest daughter, then in elementary school, where they should go. Virginia, she answered, because âeveryone we love reside in Virginiaâ.
Spanberger recalled at her rally: âAnd so we decided to transition from a path of service to country, to local engagement because she was right. All our relatives are in Virginia.â
Back in Virginia, she volunteered with a grassroots group, which addresses firearm incidents, and started a youth group. In that period, she resolved to campaign for the House, which others told her was a âcrazy endeavourâ because the party hadn't had secured the seventh district in half a century.
âBut I witnessed what the president was doing with his authority and how he was creating conflict. And I noticed my representative over and over again vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act. And I realized I had to take action. So for the record: I won.â
In the capital, she quickly became part of the centrist group, a alliance of centrist and budget-conscious lawmakers. She concentrated on lower-profile issues: bringing broadband to the countryside, fighting narcotics trade and veteransâ services.
She earned a standing for partnering with Republicans and was consistently rated as the most cooperative representative of the Virginia delegation. She was outspoken about messaging that she felt alienated centrists, warning her fellow Democrats against partisan language that could be weaponised in swing areas.
Along with Representatives a former CIA analyst and an ex-navy pilot, she was labeled a member of the âpragmatic groupâ in contrast to the left-leaning âgroupâ of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
In late 2023, she declared she would step down for a fourth term and would rather seek the state's top office in 2025.
Her campaign centred on ideas of public service, support for education and infrastructure and protection of democratic institutions. Her CIA background gave her credibility on defense issues and she described public service as a calling rather than a job.
This helped her to overcome rival candidate her challenger's criticisms on social topics, including the assertion that she is an extremist on individual freedoms and transgender healthcare.
Spanberger, who stated that communities should determine whether trans youth can compete in school athletics, cast her rival as the contender more out of step with the middle of the state's voters.
