This year's NBA season starts now, signaling the initial occasion in a decade that Australia's pair of biggest basketball stars – Ben Simmons and Patty Mills – are teamless.
Their absence signals a changing of the guard, as Boomers’ guard pair Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels step up as essential players for playoff aspirants, with recently signed nine-figure contracts establishing them as some of Australia’s highest sporting income generators.
They aren't the only ones. Fourteen Australians are set to compete for minutes across the NBA, including experienced big men Jock Landale and Duop Reath, up-and-coming forwards in Johnny Furphy and Josh Green, to promising rookies like Tyrese Proctor and Rocco Zikarsky.
After protracted discussions with the Bulls, Giddey finally signed his new deal worth US$100 million ($153m) over four seasons last month. It's a major deal for the Melburnian, but in league standards it is cheap for Giddey’s position and reputation as a primary ball-handler. The reluctance for the Bulls management to pay top dollar means the 23-year-old enters this year with a point to make.
Having been traded by Oklahoma City at the beginning of last season, he observed as his former squad stormed to the NBA championship without him. As the Bulls look to make the playoffs in the weaker East, he will need to show his scoring and defensive skills are elite-level or else he may slide towards the league's outskirts.
The guard agreed to the identical contract as Giddey recently, and after his MIP honor last season, the Hawks guard’s trajectory has taken off in the city following his exit from the Pelicans. He is now lauded as one of the league’s best defensive specialists, and topped the league in takeaways with three per game – more than one whole steal per game higher than the tally of second place.
Performing next to flamboyant Trae Young in the Hawks, the youngster can be effective this campaign as a secondary ballhandler and defensive stopper as long as the Hawks advance to the postseason. But if he can improve his long-range game, which was below league average last year, and keep enhance his distribution and driving, Daniels could become one of the league’s most versatile players.
Pacers forward the rookie has emerged as a fan favourite in Indiana following a series of spectacular slam dunks in exhibition games. His acrobatics prompted league figure Pat Beverley to label him as the “top Caucasian leaper we’ve seen in a long time”, and an invite to the mid-season slam dunk competition could be a possibility.
After playing just 8 mpg per contest over 50 appearances in his rookie campaign, the former college student is in contention for a Indiana rotation that might lean towards youth following injury to lead guard Tyrese Haliburton.
Guard Proctor fell in the NBA Draft down to the second round, where Eastern Conference contenders the Cavaliers selected him. The Cavs are favourites to make the NBA finals from the East, so it would be rare for a first-year player taken in the late picks to see significant playing minutes. But the Australian has earned time in pre-season, and his NBA-ready shot offers him a opportunity to contribute.
Veteran big man Jock Landale has a chance to claim the starting centre spot in Memphis given top prospect Zach Edey will be out for the start of the campaign after a surgical procedure.
In the Trail Blazers, Duop Reath is the veteran backup to young centres Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen, but could play regular minutes if the Blazers become in the hunt. His fellow player Matisse Thybulle is expected to be deployed as a defensive spark off the bench.
In the Hornets, Josh Green’s summer shoulder surgery has left him without a timeline to return. The player still has a contract for next season, but will not want to give his colleagues at the developing Hornets too much advantage. And a physical issue has already hindered Dante Exum, who has a knee complaint and has been absent for important exhibition chances in Dallas.
Additionally, there are those who are not expected to see much, if any, game action this season. Thirty-eight-year-old Joe Ingles is back in the Timberwolves, but appears to be primarily a mentor ensuring Anthony Edwards in check.
Rocco Zikarsky is expected to be developed by the Wolves through their G-League team. Other rookies Lachlan Olbrich in Chicago and Alex Toohey for the Golden State Warriors are also in the slow cooker, while the experienced Luke Travers will be hoping to win minutes with his compatriot for the Cavaliers.
Should anyone question Patty Mills was set to retire, he answered them with a training clip shared on his social media recently, showing the veteran is still sharp and determined on securing one more NBA contract.
What Simmons is thinking is uncertain after an break in his homeland, going fishing and using with a football. Even though he took to social media last month to reject suggestions he was retired, the former All-Star – an All Star as recently as 2021 – has yet to return to the league.
