USDA officials declared on Saturday that monthly food benefits from a major federal welfare initiatives are not going out during the coming month amid the persistent federal closure.
The federal closure had reached nearly a month when the announcement was made, coming after appeals by more than two hundred Congressional Democrats pushing the USDA to utilize reserve accounts to pay for November's food assistance.
“Ultimately, funds are depleted,” the USDA stated. “Now, no payments will be distributed” beginning in November.
Tens of millions of people count on the regular assistance, per federal data. In certain states, including New Mexico, reliance on SNAP is as high as a significant portion of citizens.
Documents reviewed by journalists showed that federal authorities would not access reserve funds to cover next month's assistance.
Congressional leaders remain deadlocked over how to support and resume the federal government.
A statement from the director at a budget research center indicated that the administration could have acted to prepare in advance to prevent benefits from running out.
“It could have, and should have made moves weeks ago to make arrangements to access these resources,” the remarks concluded. “Instead, officials could opt out to secure political leverage” while GOP lawmakers attempt to influence Democratic senators to support a spending bill that would resume the federal government.
State leaders from two affected states activated emergency protocols this week to make money available for hunger relief preparing for food benefits expiring in November.
