Senegal's Emerging Star Camara: From Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.

When I walk into the space, Lamine Camara grabs a football he won’t let go of throughout our chat. This serves as a powerful symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” remarks this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and raw talent convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a club executive or manager, but his own father. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” says Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to pursue his path in the game. Another challenge was his small stature, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After he earned the best player in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me straight to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back home,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Year and Continental Arrival

This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to victory and earning best player.

Soon after, he was unveiled as FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his family support to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and On-Field Identity

Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and superb playing qualities. Additionally, he's a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses a need to control his competitive fire, having been shown red early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit that is following me!” he quips.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals

With his current club, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Right now, attention is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. If you beat England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he is committed to Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about winning the senior top prize down the line.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley… it gives you confidence.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and build his own legendary path in the world of football.
