Per recent analysis, cabinet members held discussions with representatives from the petroleum industry in excess of 500 times throughout their first year in office – representing two times each business day.
The analysis found that fossil fuel lobbyists were present at 48% more ministerial meetings under the present administration's initial year relative to the year before.
Ministers supported the engagements, stating that representatives engaged with a diverse array of agents from "energy sector, labor organizations and civil society to drive forward our sustainable energy superpower mission".
Yet, the results have generated worry among critics about the degree of the fossil fuel industry's sway over government at a time when officials are working to lower bills and transition to a greener energy system.
The analysis, which draws from the official published record of ministerial meetings, also found:
Ministers at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero met with fossil fuel lobbyists 274 times, with sector representatives present at nearly 25% of discussions.
The secretary for energy and climate change met with fossil fuel lobbyists 250 times – with one-third of all his meetings attended by industry figures.
Throughout the same period government representatives met with labor organization delegates 61 times.
Three leading petroleum firms held discussions with representatives 100 times between them.
Petroleum sector advocates attended the majority of government meeting about the excess profits charge, a temporary levy against the "extraordinary profits" of marine petroleum firms.
A Green party MP commented: "In place of considering researchers, residents affected by climate events, or guardians anxious to ensure a protected environment for their descendants, this administration is prioritising lobbyists and earnings for oil and gas giants."
Ministers insisted the findings were "inaccurate", claiming several of the firms included also had clean energy investments and that these topics were often the focus of the meetings.
"Our priority is a just, orderly and thriving change in the offshore region in compliance with our environmental and regulatory obligations, and we are working with the industry to protect current and future generations of good jobs."
Multiple major petroleum industry giants have been criticised for cutting their green spending in recent times amid a international resistance against climate action.
An activist coordinator from an climate legal group stated: "Officials promised a people-focused leadership, but that doesn't mean yielding to corporations making money out of climate catastrophe. It's necessary to cease favoring polluters and prioritize citizens."
