Typically, clip shows face criticism by fans as a pointless time filler, or perhaps viewed as a requirement in television during the period of weekly production. That wasn't always the case, though Avatar: The Last Airbender demonstrated this via "The Ember Island Players," a beloved segment during its concluding run that is now granted a special Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair collection.
The entire Secret Lair superdrop for the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender set was announced on November 4. Containing five Secret Lairs, and although the one called "My Cabbages!" is clearly amusing nod to the show's best background character, the remaining sets feel a bit lacking creativity, except for one standout: "The Ember Island Players."
Drawing from installment 17 in the final season of the animated show, this collector's drop contains these specific cards:
Fans of Avatar fondly remember this episode, which functioned as a recap of Aang and the group's journey before the series' finale. Unlike standard summary installments, or "clip shows," "The Ember Island Players" wasn't motivated due to production constraints or creative challenges. The creators truly wanted to provide audiences an opportunity to recap the overall plot, however, they opted to execute it with flair.
During the installment, the main characters observe a play based on their exploits in a theater on Ember Island, named The Boy in the Iceberg. The play itself is factually incorrect, melodramatic, and utterly comical. It succeeds as it plays on the characters' views of themselves, setting them against compared to how society (and particularly the Fire Nation citizens) sees them. It has an ideal level of introspective humor, and it becomes arguably the finest interpretation of the show we have had.
When it comes to cost-effectiveness, this represents an excellent Secret Lair because of one major element: Braid of Fire. This specific card trades for $20 and $40 on online marketplaces currently, and for $29.99 you can snag the complete collection, or $39.99 for the foil version.
Magic: The Gathering's Avatar: The Last Airbender set can be accessed for pre-release events starting November 14 and launches globally come November 21.
