New York's next mayor confirms plans to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion

New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate during his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors since the post-war period.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core issue, hesitated to declare he would live there immediately after his victory in November.

"This decision rested on keeping my family safe and the importance of directing my full attention on implementing the agenda for affordability New Yorkers voted for," Mamdani said in a statement.

A Fond Farewell

His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community famous for its diverse immigrant communities and culinary diversity.

"To Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, the community will always live within me and the work I do," he affirmed.

A Contentious Issue

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani tied his central policy – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.

However his critics, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he hails from a prominent family.

Previous Exceptions

Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side during his three terms, which ended in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a venue for official events, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Stately Residence

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting far removed from his modest Astoria digs.

Featuring cream-colored walls, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Within, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's historical period.

The property, which is said to has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, which means the city imposes caps on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.

City residents consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the price of rent exceeds the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
