New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police shared video stills Monday of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims according to reports.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.
“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate this season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was expected to be an important component of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
