A leading Italian consumer association are raising alarms over what they call entirely unreasonable cost hikes for ski passes this cold-weather period, warning that alpine sports could become an exclusive privilege for affluent individuals.
From the majestic Alps and breathtaking Dolomites in the northern territories to the slopes of central Italy, prices are poised to increase by as much as 40% compared to 2021 levels, according to recent analysis.
The popular Dolomiti Superski ticket, which provides entry to all 12 resorts in the premium Dolomite area, will now set visitors back €86 per day this season. In the popular Abruzzo resort, a daily ski pass is expected to reach €60, after experiencing substantial visitor surges during the previous winter.
Meanwhile, annual skiing tickets will range from €755 per adult in the Abruzzo region to as much as €1,800 in the Aosta valley.
The expense of hiring winter sports gear has similarly risen, along with hotel accommodations and restaurant prices throughout alpine destinations.
The consumer association president, heading the consumer protection group, stated that the cost rises—which operators blame on increased utility expenses, resort maintenance, and requests for superior gear—were entirely unreasonable and not acceptable.
"Particularly since Italian inflation rates are under control and energy tariffs, which had raised operational costs for ski resort operators in 2022, have stabilized at previous levels," he explained.
He added that prices have climbed to points where less wealthy individuals are being compelled to skip their traditional settimana bianca, or winter vacation, completely.
Melluso observed a significant drop in mountain tourism during the 2024-2025 season, with a million fewer domestic visitors visiting ski resorts compared to the prior season due to increasing expenses.
Even with these hikes, Italy remains a more affordable destination for skiing enthusiasts in the European region compared to nearby Swiss resorts, France, and Austrian locations.
The growing concern over skiing costs comes as the nation gets ready to host the 2026 Winter Games between the first three weeks of February. Italy's foreign minister, the foreign affairs official, announced on Friday that Italy had presented a plan to the United Nations calling for a "global truce" during the international event.
"Through the Winter Games we must similarly convey a message of peace and conversation... to stop warfare during the Games," Tajani emphasized.
