The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.
The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Though the bureau was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
