England’s men’s team will initiate their UEFA Euro 2028 journey at the Manchester City’s stadium, provided that they secure the relatively straightforward qualification for a tournament hosted across most of the United Kingdom and the Ireland.
The Etihad Stadium has not welcomed an Three Lions match since the spring of 2016, when the visitors were defeated 2-1 in a friendly, but is expected to welcome the national team for their first match on a Saturday in June 2028.
The team are planned to play their last two group stage games at Wembley, but, if they top Group B, their knockout stage opener would occur at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean beginning the elimination stage at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The tournament was inaugurated at an ceremony in central London on Wednesday evening. High-ranking officials from European football’s governing body and the organizing bodies were barracked as they approached the venue by around fifty pro-Palestine demonstrators, who demanded Israel to be expelled from global football because of the conflict in Gaza.
Signs were displayed with slogans reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters called out: “Kick Israel out.”
The opening game of the European Championship will be played at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on June 9, 2028, a match that will involve Wales if they make it.
The national stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the final, which will be staged on Sunday 9 July with a kick-off time at 5pm.
It is hoped that an afternoon start, which will also be used for Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will cater to households and help reach a wider spectrum of audiences.
The Republic of Ireland are due to play their first game at the Dublin Arena and Scotland would play similarly at Hampden Park.
All four host countries’ teams will enter the qualifying tournament; two reserved places will be set aside for any that miss out on the finals through that route.
The Birmingham venue and Spurs’ ground complete the nine tournament locations. Every stadium will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarterfinal matches held at the national stadium of each host.
The qualifying draw will be conducted in the Northern Irish capital, which was dropped as a host city last year when it emerged the Belfast stadium could not be redeveloped in time, on a date in late 2026.
“This will be a tournament for the supporters and a celebration of everything we cherish about the football – its emotion and ability to bring people together.”
In excess of three million tickets, a record for a UEFA European Championship, are anticipated to be released to supporters.
