Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated outrage after the ex-president charged a group of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and declared they should be arrested and penalized "by death" following their release of a contentious video.
The video footage, published on Tuesday, features six Democratic lawmakers who previously served in defense or security roles.
"As we did, you all made an oath to defend and defend this constitution," the representatives affirmed in the 90-second video. "Currently, the threats to our democratic foundation aren't just from abroad, but from domestically. Our statutes are explicit, you can decline improper directives, you can decline unlawful commands, you have to reject improper directives. No one has to follow commands that violate the legal system or our founding principles."
The video message appeared to provoke a furious reply from the previous commander-in-chief.
On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate publication, he stated: "This represents really concerning, and Risky to our Country. Their words cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, House Democratic leader released a unified statement condemning the comments.
"Political violence has no position in the United States," they wrote. "Representatives who appeared in the video all served our nation with tremendous patriotism and honor. We clearly censure Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous threats of violence against members of Congress, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."
The party representatives also said that they had been in touch with security officials "to guarantee the protection of these members and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these radical digital publications and withdraw his aggressive discourse before he gets someone killed," the announcement stated.
The lawmakers who were featured in the video also published a declaration.
"We serve as former service members and security experts who love this United States and took an oath to safeguard and defend the constitution of the United States," they stated. "That oath is permanent, and we intend to keep it. No intimidation, pressure, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that important responsibility."
"The significant point is that the former president views it punishable by death for us to repeat the statutes," they continued. "Military personnel should know that we have their support as they carry out their oath to the founding principles and duty to obey only proper directives. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They added: "All citizens must join forces and denounce the former president's calls for our death and political violence. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's statements and published on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the capital punishment of government members."
He continued: "This is an clear THREAT. All senators, each house member, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this immediately and unconditionally."
The Conservative official justified Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "treason", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "This constitutes very risky, you have prominent officials of the legislature instructing troops to ignore directives, I think that represents without precedent in the nation's past."
The Republican leader also according to sources stated to journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the crime of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to analyze the terminology and establish all that."
During a administration briefing on that day, when asked by a journalist, "Is the president want to put to death elected officials?", the administration spokesperson responded: "Absolutely not."
"We should understand about what the president is addressing," the official said. "There are sitting members of the federal government who coordinated to orchestrate a digital communication to personnel of the national defense, to current military personnel urging them to defy the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She said: "The integrity of our armed forces relies on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is broken, it can result in casualties, it can cause chaos, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are essentially supporting."
