The US government has criticized the administration in Caracas over the passing of a jailed political dissident, calling it a "clear indication of the vile character" of President Nicolás Maduro's rule.
The political prisoner died in his cell at the El Helicoide detention center in Caracas, where he had been detained for over a year, according to rights groups and opposition groups.
The Venezuelan government stated that the man in his fifties showed signs of a myocardial infarction and was transferred to a hospital, where he died on the weekend.
This latest intervention from the US is part of an escalating exchange of rhetoric between the American government and President Maduro, who has claimed Washington of seeking his overthrow.
In recent months, the United States has boosted its troop levels in the Latin America and has executed a succession of lethal attacks on boats it claims have been used for moving illegal substances.
US President Donald Trump has accused Maduro himself of being the head of one of the country's cartels—an allegation the Venezuelan president vehemently denies—and has warned of the use of force "via a land invasion".
"The detainee had been 'unjustly imprisoned' in a 'facility for mistreatment'," declared the US State Department's Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs.
DĂaz was arrested in that year after participating with numerous opposition figures to contest the results of that period's election for president.
Venezuela's pro-government national electoral body announced Maduro the winner, despite figures from dissidents indicating their nominee had been victorious by a wide margin.
The elections were broadly rejected on the international stage as lacking in credibility, and sparked protests across the nation.
The former governor, who led the island state, was indicted of "promoting hatred" and "extremism" for disputing Maduro's electoral win.
Local advocacy group Foro Penal has expressed alarm over deteriorating conditions for political prisoners in the country.
"One more detained dissident has died in Venezuelan jails. He had been incarcerated for a twelve months, in segregation," wrote Alfredo Romero, the organisation's president, on a social media platform.
He said that DĂaz had only been allowed one meeting from his child during the entire length of his detention. He added that 17 detained dissidents have lost their lives in the country since that year.
Opposition groups have also denounced the government over the demise of DĂaz.
MarĂa Corina Machado, a well-known political rival who was awarded this year's Nobel Peace Prize but who is in seclusion to escape detention, stated that DĂaz's death was not an isolated incident.
"Tragically, it adds to an disturbing and painful sequence of demises of detained dissidents detained in the wake of the electoral suppression," she said.
The Democratic Unitary Platform declared that DĂaz "passed away unfairly".
DĂaz's own political party, Democratic Action (AD), also honored the politician, noting he had been unjustly detained without due process and had been kept in situations "that infringed upon his human rights".
Strains between the United States and Venezuela have become ever more tense over what Trump has labeled efforts to stop the movement of narcotics and immigrants into the US.
Maduro has for his part claimed the US of using its war on drugs as an excuse to remove his regime and access Venezuela's enormous crude oil deposits.
The United States has also deployed a sizable naval force—its biggest presence in the area in many years—along with many soldiers.
In a related move, the Venezuelan military reportedly swore in thousands of soldiers in a single event on Saturday, in reaction to what military leaders called US "intimidation".
