Crew Member Discloses Emotional Distress After Wave of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also carried well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was drowned out under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following achieving her goal, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She noted that even with the backlash, considerable good had resulted from the mission, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The self-operating spacecraft launched from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of space.
