The protective shield encasing the Chernobyl reactor core within Ukraine has lost its primary function of containing radioactive material, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This loss of function comes after a drone attack earlier this year that blew a hole in the protective shell.
A drone strike in the second month of the year caused a breach in the so-called “New Safe Confinement” arch. This massive shield, constructed for €1.5bn with work finishing in 2019, was intended to seal off radioactive material over the long term. A recent IAEA inspection last week confirmed that the drone impact had degraded the structural integrity of the steel confinement.
The containment arch's main safety functions, such as confinement, are no longer operational, stated IAEA head Rafael Grossi. Grossi noted that the mission confirmed no lasting harm to key support structures or sensor systems.
The initial 1986 explosion at the Chernobyl plant – which occurred when Ukraine was a republic within the Soviet Union – released radioactive fallout over much of Europe. In a hurried containment effort, Soviet engineers built a concrete “sarcophagus” over the damaged reactor, though it possessed only a 30-year lifespan. The New Safe Confinement was constructed to enable the future dismantling of the old sarcophagus, the damaged reactor building, and the melted nuclear fuel within.
Although limited repairs have been carried out, the IAEA stressed that a full-scale repair effort is essential. This is needed to stop additional deterioration and to guarantee safety for the coming decades. Officials in Ukraine previously reported that a unmanned aircraft armed with a powerful explosive hit the facility, causing a fire and compromising the outer shielding.
These developments highlight the ongoing vulnerabilities at one of the world's most infamous nuclear disaster sites amid ongoing armed conflict.
