The California governor, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he will make a decision about whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 once the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.
"Yeah, it would be dishonest if I denied it," the governor commented when questioned about contemplating a campaign for president post the 2026 midterms. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."
Newsom's time in office as California's leader wraps up in January 2027, and he cannot run again. Yet, he cautioned that any choice is still years away.
"Fate will determine that," he added.
Newsom has come to the forefront as a prominent opponent of the current federal leadership, using his social media accounts and advocating for a ballot measure that would expand the party's congressional seats in as a counter to Republican redistricting efforts. This move has drawn criticism from adversaries.
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor is indifferent about the state's residents in a Sunday segment on a major news network. Duffy revealed intentions to withhold federal funds from the state and threatened suspending the authority to grant CDLs.
"I plan to withdraw $160m from California," he declared, following a recent tragic collision in the state involving an undocumented semi truck driver that caused fatalities and casualties.
His administration noted that the federal government had reauthorized the driver's employment multiple times, which permitted him to obtain a CDL under U.S. law.
The transportation secretary had earlier indicated he was blocking $40 million from the state for failing to implement English language requirements for CDL holders.
"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, still doesn't understand U.S. regulations," the governor's team retorted in a last month's release responding to the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, as opposed to this individual, we focus on reality: The state's CDL holders had a accident mortality rate nearly 40% lower than the countrywide rate.
