Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, such as the soft-colored suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

His passing follows just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Lasting Legacy

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in shaping sculptural silhouettes made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the UK's fashion authority.

In the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included a number of outfits for her US tour after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Performative Style: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

Design circles laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose legacy on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
