British Katie Boulter admits she feels she has to "decide between my physical health and my professional position" as the race persists for a spot in January's Australian Open main event.
While the regular WTA Tour tournament schedule is finished, there are still position points to be earned in Chile, Argentina, Ecuador and European destinations.
The female participant roster for the initial Grand Slam of the forthcoming season will be based on the international positions of the December cutoff, which could create a difficult choice for players close to the selection threshold.
Previous British top-ranked player Boulter experienced an abductor in her final event of the year in Asian venues last month, and is now evaluating whether to participate in the WTA 125 secondary tournament in European venues, France, in the first week of December.
Boulter's current physical issue, and the reality she would need to secure at least three matches in Angers to improve her standing, means she may probably eventually not participating.
In opposition, male players are not facing the same dilemma, as for the first time the men's Australian Open competitor lineup will be established from present week's rankings, which is the ATP's standard season-concluding position determination.
The adjustment is aimed at preventing competitors from seeking standing points during what is fundamentally the break period.
This year has been a difficult one for Boulter.
She achieved merely 14 professional primary competition contests and lately separated with trainer Biljana Veselinovic after a lengthy working relationship in which she secured multiple WTA victories.
"Biljana is an incredible instructor, and an remarkably excellent individual as well, which produces circumstances particularly challenging," Boulter said.
The search for a different coach is currently ongoing, looking for an individual who has high-level background as Boulter maintains the belief she can be a top-20 competitor.
"Going forward with a replacement instructor, a key aspect I'm absolutely certain on is that they are going to be an individual who has considerable expertise in how to make it to the very top level of this game," she explained.
"I've been ranked as elevated as twenty-three and I believe I can return to that position. I don't believe my standard has gone anywhere, I believe the consistency must enhance.
"My aim is not simply to be ranked 50, 40, thirty, twenty - we've achieved that. The objective is to be inside the top twenty."
