Arsenal's Debated Sponsorship Deal with Visit Rwanda Will Conclude In the Upcoming Season

Arsenal Football Club has officially announced that its contentious sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda will terminate in the coming June.

Context and Criticism

The partnership, said to be worth around ten million pounds each year, began in 2018 and has since come under fire.

The backlash is due to accusations of Rwandan assistance for the M23 rebel group in persistent fighting in the eastern region of the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Months ago, Arsenal was criticized for issuing a severe rebuff to the Congolese government by failing to convene with Congolese diplomat Thérèse Wagner to talk about the deal.

Partnership Structure and Objectives

Visit Rwanda functions as a division of the Rwanda Development Board, which is a public entity.

It is widely believed that Arsenal signed and upheld this partnership primarily to expand their African supporter base.

Nevertheless, the partnership has now terminated after both parties “mutually agreed” to part ways.

“Collaboratively, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have surpassed the primary aims of the partnership – promoting conservation and eco-friendly travel, inspiring millions of supporters to explore Rwanda, and establishing a durable base for visitor increase,” stated an official Arsenal statement.

The announcement added that the partnership has also aided Rwanda's objective to emerge as an global sports center in Africa and welcome more worldwide tournaments while implementing local football projects that have assisted numerous youth athletes and coaches improve their techniques and promote increased engagement in sport across the country.

Leadership View and Supporter Response

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's top executive, described the partnership as a “significant journey” and stated it had been “propelling” the club's goals.

However, this perspective was not shared by a section of Arsenal's fanbase, with the campaign group Arsenal Peace Advocates demonstrating outside the North London venue during the initial Champions League semi-final match against PSG in the end of April.

Protesters displayed a banner that read “Drop Visit Rwanda” and distributed armbands to hide the Rwanda branding on kits.

Industry Perspective and Fellow Clubs

During that period, PSG continued their sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda for several more years.

At the same time, the Spanish club inked a recent contract for the equivalent timeframe that has caused the logo being carried on the Spanish club's male and female kits.
