American Navy Commander to Brief Lawmakers as Cross-Party Scrutiny Grows Over Boat Strike

A senior US Navy admiral is scheduled to deliver a confidential briefing to lawmakers monitoring the military this Thursday, as they examine a US attack on a vessel in the Caribbean waters. The incident, which allegedly struck a boat carrying drugs, reportedly included a second engagement that eliminated any remaining individuals.

Administration Justifies Actions as Defensive Measures

The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, on Monday asserted that the second strike was conducted “in self-defence” and in accordance with laws governing armed conflict. Bipartisan examination has increased over a account that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth issued a spoken command in September to attack the boat.

Democrats have said the claims, first reported last week, could amount to a war crime, and GOP members have also expressed their apprehensions about the lawfulness of the strike on September 2nd. The House and Senate armed services committees have opened inquiries into the recent US armed engagements on boats in the Caribbean region and Pacific waters.

“Secretary Hegseth authorised the naval commander to conduct these military actions,” said Leavitt. “The commander worked well within his mandate and the law, overseeing the operation to ensure the vessel was destroyed and the threat to the United States of America was eliminated.”

In her comments to reporters, Leavitt did not challenge the account that there were individuals who survived after the initial strike. Her justification came after ex-President Donald Trump a day earlier remarked he “wouldn’t have wanted that – not a second strike” when asked about the incident.

Mounting Legislative Concern and Administration Support

Monday evening, Hegseth wrote online: “Adm Mitch Bradley is an American hero, a consummate professional, and has my 100% support. I support him and the combat decisions he has made – on the September 2 mission and all others since.”

A month following the strike, Bradley was promoted from commander of JSOC to commander of USSOCOM.

Anxiety over the government’s armed actions against suspected drug-smuggling vessels has been growing in Congress, but particulars of this subsequent attack shocked many legislators from both parties and generated stark questions about the lawfulness of the operations and the overall strategy in the region, particularly toward Venezuela's leader Nicolás Maduro.

The lawmakers indicated they did not have confirmation whether the recent report was true, and some GOP senators were doubtful. Nevertheless, they said the alleged targeting of individuals of an initial rocket attack presented grave issues and merited further scrutiny.

Administration and Military Officials Reiterate Position

The administration weighed in after the commander-in-chief on the weekend strongly defended Hegseth. “Pete said he did not order the killing of those two men,” Trump stated. He added, “And I trust him.”

Leavitt noted Hegseth had conversed with congressional representatives who may have expressed some worries about the allegations over the past few days.

General Dan Caine, the head of the joint chiefs of staff, also spoke over the weekend with the two Republican and two Democratic lawmakers leading the Senate and House armed services committees. He restated “his faith in the experienced commanders at every echelon”, Caine’s spokesperson said in a release.

The statement added that the conversation centered on “discussing the purpose and lawfulness of missions to interrupt illegal smuggling rings which endanger the safety and security of the Americas”.

Congressional Leaders React and Promise Investigation

The Senate majority leader, John Thune, on Monday broadly defended the missions, repeating the White House line that they were necessary to stem the influx of illicit drugs into the US.

Thune stated the panels in Congress would investigate what occurred. “I don’t think you want to draw any judgments or deductions until you have all the facts,” he said of the September 2nd attack. “We’ll see where they point.”

Following the news article, Hegseth wrote on the end of the week that “misleading reporting is producing more fabricated, inflammatory, and disparaging coverage to undermine our incredible warriors working to protect the homeland”.

“Our ongoing missions in the Caribbean are lawful under both US and global statutes, with every step in accordance with the rules of war – and sanctioned by the best military and civilian lawyers, up and down the military hierarchy,” Hegseth stated.

The top Senate Democrat, Chuck Schumer, labeled Hegseth a “national embarrassment” over his reaction to detractors. Schumer demanded that Hegseth release the video of the attack and appear under penalty of perjury about what happened.

The GOP lawmaker for the state of Mississippi, Roger Wicker, the chair of the Senate military panel, pledged that his committee's inquiry would be “conducted thoroughly and by the book”.

“We’ll discover the ground truth,” he added, noting that the implications of the report were “serious charges”.

The 2 September strike was part of a sequence carried out by the American armed forces in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific Ocean as Trump has directed the buildup of a naval group of naval vessels near the Venezuelan coast, including the biggest US carrier. Over 80 people were fatally wounded in the strikes.
