American Attack on Caracas Stokes Fears of Potential Danish Territory Takeover.

The latest US-led bombardment in the South American nation and the detention of its leader have renewed unease regarding Washington's designs on Greenland. Supporters of the ex-president's political movement have allegedly set their sights on the vast landmass in the wake of the events in the southern hemisphere.

Inflammatory Messages and Official Backlash

Only hours following the initiation of the Venezuelan campaign, a well-known conservative podcaster, who is the spouse of a high-ranking White House aide, shared a suggestive map. The picture showed Greenland covered in the stars and stripes, accompanied by single-word message: "SOON."

This blatant threat to annex the mineral-rich land, which is a member of the NATO alliance, provoked swift and firm criticism from Denmark's representatives.

"Denmark and the US are strong partners and should continue to work together as such. US security is also the Arctic's and our security," declared the Danish ambassador to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the US work together to guarantee security in the Arctic."

The diplomat further pointed out that the kingdom had substantially boosted its defence spending recently, allocating a large sum expressly for Arctic and North Atlantic security. "Furthermore, we expect full recognition for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark," he added.

Political Appointments and Geopolitical Interests

The tensions were further exacerbated by the previous appointment of a Southern governor as a representative to Greenland. The appointee had openly thanked the president, saying it was an "privilege" to serve in a volunteer capacity to "make Greenland a part of the US."

After the military action in Venezuela, this envoy commended the administration's decisive move, linking it to the wider "fight against narcotics."

Ever since assuming office, the American leader has repeatedly unnerved European allies with his expressed desire in Greenland. The island is viewed as critically important for defence and potential resource extraction. It already hosts the most northerly US air base.

Leaving the Door Open to Military Action

In a notable television interview, the president refused to exclude the resorting to military force to gain control of Greenland. This stance comes amid growing great-power rivalry in the Arctic. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.

He characterized Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll look after, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for international security."

Growing Tensions and Indigenous Opposition

In reaction to this persistent "rhetoric" of intent, Denmark's security agency took the extraordinary step last month of classifying the United States as a "security risk."

The leaders of Denmark and Greenland delivered a joint and stern statement: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You cannot take over other countries."

Surveys in Greenland reveals a complex picture. While a overwhelming percentage of the territory's inhabitants desire independence from Denmark, there is also little to no appetite to become part of the United States. The territory has had the legal right to declare independence for many years.

Expert Assessment: A Plausible Scenario?

Some analysts are now re-evaluating the likelihood of such a action. One thinktank director focusing in defence conceded she had once discounted the sabre-rattling but was "currently not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to station a couple hundred or a few thousand soldiers on Greenland, and it's unclear to me which power could intervene about it," she concluded.
