Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about observing this endearing family navigate their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running layer of irony. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to enjoy the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
