A extensive search and recovery operation is actively in progress in the Caribbean Sea for a pair of lost sailing vessels loaded with humanitarian supplies traveling from Mexico to the island of Cuba.
The Mexican government has deployed naval assets and search planes to find the missing boats, which were carrying no fewer than 9 personnel, per a military release.
The ships had been expected to make landfall in Cuba's capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no official word of their safe arrival, the statement clarified.
The island nation has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the island struggles through multiple national electricity failures.
"Both skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are outfitted with proper safety systems and emergency beacons," a spokesperson for the convoy commented.
The nine crew members are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from each country along with their embassy officials.
"The group is co-operating fully with the officials and remain confident in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.
Previously that week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had carried 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the nation.
That ship, dubbed "a new Granma" following the name of the boat in which Castro returned to Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, bicycles and provisions.
Charity groups and individuals have been at the forefront of initiatives to bring essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation was initiated.
Global bodies have since warned of ""severe" shortages of supplies, with more than fifty thousand operations postponed in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.
Political measures have been ramped up lately, with remarks from various leaders highlighting the complex state of bilateral relations.
Reacting to recent proposals, a high-ranking official from Cuba stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Accounts suggest that preliminary steps of talks had begun, although their present status remains not publicly known.
The Mexican navy stated it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to locate the sailboats and ensure the well-being of the crews.
To date, there has been silence on the lost ships by the Cuban government.
